Clark and Jain note, The relation of knowledge to reality has itself become ambiguous. Instead, by this "subduing of reality" each decides upon reality's nature for himself. Truth is whatever man declares it to be or, as [C. S.] Lewis aptly notes, whatever the men in power declare it to be. In this scheme, natural science quickly devolves from the pursuit of truth to a mere technology, or the control of nature. And social science stands aloof from the pursuit of human flourishing in the world and the next in exchange for the efficient bureaucratic organization of society for maximum production and consumption. This displacement of the true and the good provides a fertile ground for the growth of postmodern antirealism, which is perhaps a variant of the ancient sophism that so troubled Socrates and Plato.
